umyf - what is it?

UMYF (United Methodist Youth Fellowship) includes all of the youth ministry options available to you at FUMC.  Our Sunday evening youth gathering is called UMYF, too, and meets on most Sundays throughout the year.

What is UMYF?  Well, the United Methodist part comes from the whole UM church.  Youth includes everyone in 7th through 12th grades. Then Fellowship can be defined as:  1 friendly relationship; companionship; 2 community of interest, feeling; 3 communion, as between members of the same church; 4 an association of persons having similar tastes and interests; verb: to join in fellowship, esp. religious fellowship.  So, when you put them all together -- you have youth who are connected (and friendly) through our church, FUMC Dothan, to be together for a common goal of fellowship and connection through our faith in Jesus Christ.

Meeting times for UMYF each Sunday during the school year are usually* as follows:

  • 4:00 to 5:00 pm   Crossflame
  • 5:00 to 6:45 pm   UMYF/Snack Supper

* Usually?  On holidays (Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, plus major school holidays) we do not meet so you and our youth counselors can have family time.  Sometimes we change the schedule due to upcoming choir events, district youth events or whatever special programming requires changes. Our Summer schedule varies a great deal!  Watch the website and newsletters for details about what we're doing each week.

What do we do at UMYF every week?  Different stuff! Sometimes we play big "dumb" games; sometimes we do really meaningful worship things; sometimes we have discussions before or after games and worship; sometimes we leave the church to do something like a canned food drive or to go the AdventureLand or bowling or something... If we ever leave the church property, the church newsletter/bulletin will specify the details! Otherwise, we will be at the church from 5 until 6:45.

If you want to know who will be here -- call around and ask people! Pick 'em up or meet 'em here! Pretend it's Friday Night and you're making plans!!! It's great when you are comfortable just coming and not caring who else is here because you realize we're all Connected through Christ... but if you need that safety of a friend your age that's okay too! Don't wait for them to call you -- they may be feeling the same way -- invite someone!

FAQ's

-- Does everyone have to be a member of FUMC? No.  Frequently we have UMYF members who are members of another church, but for whatever reason they choose to be involved in UMYF here.  We always encourage people to maintain relationships with the churches that their family attends too!  (and to discuss their participation with their parents)

-- Is it like church?  Do you have to dress up?  No and NO!

-- Is it okay to bring a friend from somewhere else?  YES!

-- Do you have to come every week to "be a member"? No, but coming every week is helpful for you & how you view and/or participate in the whole thing.  If you don't like dodgeball and we play that one Sunday, don't assume that is all we ever do and use that as an excuse not to come.  If you want to see what happens at UMYF -- try it out!

-- If I come to UMYF do I have to be in a Bible Study or in the choir?  No, you don't HAVE to do anything else -- but you can!  You can sing in the choir; be an acolyte, server or usher on Sunday morning; ring handbells; come to Bible Study; come to Sunday morning worship; be active in Sunday School; play on the church bball team; go on youth trips, etc.  But you are not required to do anything!

If you'd like to know where you might fit in the best, contact Lee Ann, Andy or Leisa and we'll be happy to help you connect!
