our volunteers

Sterling Boykin - Sterling doesn't get to do as much with the group as he'd like because he's busy being an Associate Minister at the church, but is listed as a volunteer because he does pitch in whenever we need him. He's helped with Confirmation, is #1 popcorn tester in the Cafe, and loves a good game of basketball, horse, or bounce in the CLC whenever he can come over. Sterling is always involved in the Counselors & Friends Football team.

Debbie Cheney - When the kids were babies they were youth counselors, now that the kids have both gone off to college at Huntingdon, they're back!! Debbie is an awesome UMYF counselor, helps lots in the Pumpkin Patch, and is Lee Ann's adopted Big Sis - which makes her one awesome Aunt for Ellie and Jes. Shannon & Ben's call her Mom! She has taught aerobics and parenting classes at the church and can often be found walking on the track!

John Cheney - UMYF Counselor Supreme! John has been quoted by son, Ben, as saying "If you want to be in the story, you have to put in the time." He and Debbie put in the time in the youth dept. as a young couple with babies, and are back now since the "babies" have gone off to college. John is a big volleyball fan, not-so-much of a front lawn football fan anymore (the Orthopedist says, No More), has a Harley, works at Farley, and can fold an awesome palm cross!  The only thing that we have found that John can't do is stand on the sidelines...

Steve Fendley - Dr. Steve is an awesome UMYF Counselor and is a super surgeon on the side! He's Michaela and Madison's dad first and foremost, but has also prooved to be a great guitar player and has even been a dancer on stage, too! His wife, Joyce, is an awesome cook and is really cool because she lets him come hang out with us.

Carol Flowers - Marvelous Breakfast Cook! She came in and got to flip pancakes before any other trainee so far! She is in charge of special arrangements and making sure that Lee Ann gets breakfast! Her kids have all graduated from our youth program -- and she's still here!

Kyle Gilbert - Jr. High Sunday School rotation team. Kyle sells wood and loves to hang out int the woods... He graduated from Huntingdon after growing up in this area. He's Mary Kate, William and George's dad, and married to college sweetheart Julia!

Bill and Katie Holland - great UMYF Counselors & summer JR high Bible Study leaders! They were counselors as newlyweds when Andy was a terror in the group and have come back since he's on staff. Don't ask them for Andy stories from the past -- he says they don't have any... but ask about Atlanta if you get a chance. They have 2 great kids and are active all over the church. Katie is really talented with sewing, knitting & scrapbooking-- she can even teach you how! Bill loves to do stuff outdoors like hunting, and will even take a youth or two with him! He is one of our amazing Adult "Counselor and Friends" Football Team players and is really good at Korean War with his fabulous wing-span . They both love late night cosmic bowling, just ask them!

Jack Kale - Jr High Sunday School teaching team, Captain; knows everyone's name! He's our own Rocket Man! -- Did you know that Dothan has a whole rocket shooting society? Jack is the Big Man in Charge and can teach you how if you're interested. Jack works at the Nuclear Plant and can answer tricky engineer-type questions!

Eddy Keel - Sr High Sunday School teaching team, Captain; UMYF Counselor; Choir Member; Mission Trip Counselor.  Eddy is the Captain of the Undefeated UMYF Counselor & Friends Football Team, a Super Bowl Sunday tradition. Eddy has been teaching youth SS since 1975 (except for 3 years they took off to have children)! He knows everyone! He's a pharmacist in real life.

Mary Kate Keel - Sr High Sunday School teaching team; Mission Trip Counselor. She's the enforcer in Eddy's class -- she also takes roll -- so she's taught since 1975 too!! She took care of lots or our youth in the FUMC Daycare when they were little too -- and still works there now.

Bob Kirkby - Jr High Sunday School teaching team; Choir Member; and great flutist. affectionately known by his youth as "Bob the Builder." Bob is a certified Lay Speaker through the UM church and always has a great life lesson to share.

Ronny Lisenby - Bus Driver Extraordinare; Mission Trip Expert; and UMYF Counselor when we need him.  Ronny has lots of advise about Financial stuff and Insurance which is his career, but also about computers, tools & gadgets, Habitat Houses, and SEACT props, which are his hobbies!  Ronny's great kids, Gillian & Woods, have both graduated, but we won't let him leave!

Christian Margeson - Emergency Crew for UMYF and the Breakfast Crew; Staff Physical Therapist; Noah's Ark Kitchen King! He knows lots about Physical Therapy, cooking, hunting, and running in Iron Man Events!

Rev. Lynn Nesbitt - Confirmation Clergy / Teacher; UM Advisor to Lee Ann & Andy; Lynn knows everything you need to know about hot tea & always has some in her office. She has lived in England and preached in Madrid! (Madrid is actually just south of Dothan, but it sounds like Spain, huh?) Lynn is a great cook and she shares her recipes. She can teach you how to knit a prayer shawl, too.

Leisa Owens - Parent Team (Snack Supper) Coordinator; Catherine's Mom!  Technically she's staff now, but she works more than we pay her for so we list her as a volunteer too! Jaime Owens is Leisa's husband and he's a great volunteer at home so she can do stuff with us. He hangs out with Christopher on Sundays so Leisa can be with us.

Judy & Bruce Peterson - Judy has been a faithful volunteer in many areas of the youth ministry.  Whether it's a mission trip, UMYF, retreats or some other activity she's always there working with the rest of us.  She's a hard worker and fun to be around.  Bruce sets up our breakfast on Tuesday mornings and keeps us up to date on local politics and stuff.  He's a great ski trip counselor too! They are Jacob's parents, but we're keeping them when he leaves for college in the fall.

Les Pinckard - Les has been a faithful volunteer at UMYF this year.  Whether he's in there with the group or chaperoning some of the younger youth in the cafe he's a constant presence in the community.  Les also happens to be Stewart's dad.

Keith Pruitt - UMYF Counselor, best-known by some as the Tool Truck and Chicargo-van team leader. Joey and Mary Beth's dad! Keith works at Farley Nuclear Plant and has strange hours so we see him when he's on "regular people shift" hours.

Don Swanson - Magnificent Breakfast Crew Chief; we like to call him our "Chef" but he says he's not officially a "Chef" so we're saying "Chief." He's been cooking for youth for too MANY years to count! Don holds 1/2 of the Smoke Out recipe and can make and flip pancakes with a left-handed spatula better than anyone in at least the whole Southeast (which means anywhere since this is where the best cooks are anyway, right?)! He says he's retired, but he still comes to cook pancakes!

Amy Thomas - Andy's wife. She's leading our Jr. High Bible Study girl's group this summer.  We list her as a volunteer because she does way more than most wives of the youth guy have to do with their four kids in tow!

Lee Thomas - Breakfast Early Crew. He's Andy's dad! And more importantly to him, he's Whit, Levi, Kate, and Mary Alice's Poppy. Lee is involved in the church through Bible Studies and Sunday School and has held numerous leadership positions.

Mark & Susan Warren - Breakfast Crew - He works the grill, she works the line -- together they're a great team. Emily's parents (Hannah is at AU)! They gave us two computers that we are adding to the Cafe. Susan also helps with Church Party, the Special Kids Tuesday night program, at the church.

Billy & Suzanne Woods - Sr High Sunday School teaching team. He used to be Mayor of Headland, knows everyone from there, and loves to harass Lee Ann! Suzanne runs Flowers Hospital! She has been a Trip Counselor and Ski Instuctor for youth and staff. They have a daughter named Lily but she's not old enough for youth yet!
